google logo Les Paul, creator of the legendary Gibson guitar - credited with helping to invent rock'n'roll - is being remembered today (June 9) on what would have been his 96th birthday. The musician and inventor released the Les Paul Goldtop guitar model through the Gibson company in 1952, and unveiled his widely popular Les Paul Standard model in 1954Les Paul passed away on August 13, 2009 from a severe case of pneumonia. To mark his birthday, Google.com have launched an interactive logo, resembling his famous electric guitar model. The ten-string “guitar”, which also resembles the Google logo, can be played by hovering over the strings. Alternatively, users can click on the box below the logo and control the strings using their keyboard buttons. There is a 30-second recording option available, but it is currently only working in the U.S.

This is the latest in Google’s interactive logos, the first having been launched in May 2010 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Pac-Man videogame.

Other so-called Google Doodles include an interactive submarine view in honour of science-fiction writer Jules Verne's 183rd birthday, a video doodle commemorating Charlie Chaplin's 122nd birthday and an animation created for Earth Day 2011.
