CCMBAddressing a press conference here today, CCMB Director Ch Mohan Rao said the Siddis are mainly found in three Indian states–Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh– who have typical African features such as dark skin, curly hairs and broad nose. He said India is a home to a large number of ethinic groups and tribes and added different people of different groups were settling down in India and got mixed with Indian population.
Mr Rao said, the analysis after the study conducted in 5 years stated that the Siddis have been brought by Portuguese traders during the 17th to 19th centuries and sold to the Nawabs and the Sultans of India to serve as soldiers and slaves. However, the Director said there was no comprehensive genetic study to establish their African link. The Siddis belonging to Muslim community mostly live in Central part of the city in Andhra Pradesh and in remote areas of Karnataka and Gujarat where there was more Hindu population, he said.
