marilyn monroeToday, on what would have been Marilyn Monroe's 85th birthday, word is spreading about discovery of a previously unknown batch of photos of the actress and another screen siren, Jayne Mansfield. The photos turned up, said Anton Fury of New Jersey, after a flood in his studio caused him to clean up. Fury, a photographer, told the New York Daily News that "I have no idea who took these pictures. I have no idea if they're worth anything, where they came from... nothing."He said he paid $2 for an envelope of negatives at a garage sale in the 1980s. There are 33 images of Monroe and 71 of Mansfield.
An art dealer and appraiser told the Daily News that the photos of Monroe were likely taken about 1950, possibly in the Los Angeles area. Fury reportedly plans to sell the photos at auction, CBS News saiMonroe, who died in 1962, appeared in fewer than three dozen films. But she has been immortalized in song (Elton John's original "Candle in the Wind") and on screen. To mark her birthday, Legacy.com put together a list of some of the memorable films and stars that have paid tribute to her over the years.Probably her most memorable screen moment came during filming of "The Seven Year Itch," when a rush of air from a passing subway train kicked up her pleated white dress. That same dress is due to be auctioned later this month, but a campaign has been launched to save the dress from being sold to a private collector; instead it would be put on public display in New York City.
